Solo Normandie 2016

Granville, Manche, France

Tomorrow will be the start of the Solo Normandie. Formerly known as the Solo Basse-Normandie, the 3rd solo race of the 2016 Figaro season is on the program for the seventh consecutive year being organized by the Yacht Club de Granville.

The offshore race will start Thursday at 1430 and is expected to end by Saturday at noon, with the prize giving ceremony at 1730.

The 15 sailors will get the opportunity to sail in waters they will encounter again next month on the first and second leg of the Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro. And this part of the Channel is particularly challenging with the tide playing a big part, with the currents and the exposure of numerous reefs. They will need to be extremely cautious of the terrain, something peculiar in offshore sailing.

Six British sailors will be racing along the Normandy coastline: Andrew Baker (Artemis 64), Hugh Brayshaw (Artemis 23), Robin Elsey (Artemis 43), Will Harris (Artemis 77), Mary Rook (Artemis 37) and Alan Roberts (Vasco da Gama).

Alexis Loison (Groupe Fiva) will be one to look out for, having been victorious in 2012. Damien Cloarec (SafeRail) and Alan Roberts who both came out of the Solo Maitre Coq with season best results will also be on the hunt for a victory.

But no one can say for certain who will succeed to Yann Eliès, and that is what makes the beauty of the monotype Figaro Bénéteau2.
